Summer Reading Lists

Every summer, the Goffstown Public Schools supply us with reading lists for all grades and reading levels, and we make sure to have multiple copies available all summer, for students to borrow. Reading lists for students in elementary through middle school grades, and adult book discussion lists, can be found at:

This summer, high school students are assigned to read either Refugee by Alan Gratz or American Like Me edited by America Ferrera and were provided with a copy of their book by the school.

Assigned books from GHS

Summary of Refugee: Although separated by continents and decades, Josef, a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany; Isabel, a Cuban girl trying to escape the riots and unrest plaguing her country in 1994; and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy in 2015 whose homeland is torn apart by violence and destruction, embark on harrowing journeys in search of refuge, discovering shocking connections that tie their stories together.

Summary of American Like Me: America Ferrera invites thirty-one of her friends, peers, and heroes to share their stories about life between cultures. We know them as actors, comedians, athletes, politicians, artists, and writers. However, they are also immigrants, children or grandchildren of immigrants, indigenous people, or people who otherwise grew up with deep and personal connections to more than one culture. Each of them struggled to establish a sense of self, find belonging, and feel seen. And they call themselves American enthusiastically, reluctantly, or not at all.

Want to read along with your teen for an at-home discussion? We have copies of both books, in multiple formats. Take a look at our catalog at www.goffstownlibrary.com/search or call us at 497-2102.

Please remember that a Goffstown Public Library card is required to check out materials, so be prepared with identification if you need to get one. Patrons may check out up to three of these summer reading items on their card at one time. Call us at 497-2102 if you have questions, or stop by.
