“We just want our stuff back!”

At any given time we have thousands of dollars worth of library owned materials that we have billed members to replace.  That’s a lot of books, movies, music, video games, etc, that are usually gone for good.  Please, if you aren’t sure if you have materials give us a call at 497-2102 and we will check your account.  If you know you have long overdue library materials, please bring them in and it will help clean up your card.  We just want our stuff back!

National Library Week amnesty continues through Saturday, April 19.

National Poetry Month, held every April, celebrates poetry and we hope you’ll participate with one of the activities listed below, or by reading, writing, or listening to some poetry.

Everyone Can Be a Poet

Through April, join the fun with our second floor displays. Book Spine Poetry is an easy way for anyone to create poetry by rearranging books, so the titles on the spines become the lines of a poem. No writing required! With Altered Page Poems/Blackout Poetry you can discover the wonder of found poetry by highlighting text on discarded book pages. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Celebrate National Poetry Month at the Goffstown Public Library
  • Kids, April 17 – Poetry Palooza event at 4pm. Registration Required.
  • Adults & Teens, April 24 – Poem in your Pocket Day. No registration required.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

The Human Library is a worldwide project designed to challenge views that lead to misunderstanding, prejudice and discrimination within communities.

Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges:  Diverse Community Voices

Sunday, April 6, 2014 This event has already occurred.

The first event of its kind in New Hampshire, this program brings together a collection of Human Books who have volunteered to tell their personal stories and to answer questions about their occupations, lives and experiences. Readers will have the unique opportunity to check out and converse with these Human Books, giving them the chance to experience another’s journey and challenges, ask questions, and expand awareness.

Link to The Human Library Catalog at the Goffstown Public Library

Readers can peruse a catalog of Human Books, and will have the opportunity to check out a Human Book for a face-to-face 15 minute conversation in a safe, respectful environment. The books are prepared to share their stories, and sample questions will be available to help jump start conversations.

Note: During the Human Library event other library services will not be available.

View and share the video on YouTube.

The Greater Goffstown Human Library project is the result of a unique collaboration between UNH Manchester, Goffstown High School and the Goffstown Public Library. Having successfully applied to the international Human Library organization, librarians Carolyn Gamtso of UNH Manchester, Melissa Mannon of Goffstown High School and Sandy Whipple of Goffstown Public Library have planned three separate Human Library events at their respective institutions. The collaboration is among the first of its kind worldwide.

The Human Library was conceived in 2000 by a Danish youth organization called Stop the Violence in response to intolerance and violence within their community. The concept quickly gained a foothold and since then, Human Libraries have been held in over 60 countries. The initiative arrived in the US in 2008 with pilot events held in Washington and California. Please visit www.humanlibrary.org or on Facebook for more information.
